Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW PE) boron-containing panels are made by using UHMW polyethylene as the base and evenly filling it with boron carbide (B₄C) and then molding it under high temperature. They rely on the combined shielding effect of hydrogen slowing down neutrons and boron absorbing them. In nuclear power plants, they are commonly used for spent fuel storage and transportation, local reactor protection, temporary storage of low to intermediate-level waste, and temporary shielding during maintenance. They have advantages like radiation protection, lightweight, corrosion resistance, easy processing, no heavy metal pollution, and low maintenance costs.
